Our Verdict

If you can’t afford a flagship Dyson heater with air purifying tech, then the AM09 has a lot going for it other than simply being cheaper – although it’s still quite expensive by the standards of plug-in heaters. But it’s compact, with a high-quality build and offers good performance and features.

Dyson fan heaters are typically big and expensive, largely because they contain air purifying tech as well as smart features like Wi-Fi connectivity, but there is a more affordable option.

Introducing the Dyson Hot+Cool Jet Focus AM09. Sure, it’s still far from being budget-friendly at £399/$499 but it’s readily available for a more approachable £269 / $299 – and if you want a Dyson rather than a dupe, this is a solid option.

Dyson classes it as a desk fan but although it’s a lot smaller than most of the brand’s range including the Pure Hot+Cool , I wouldn’t be putting it on my desk in a hurry. You could in a pinch, but I’d say this is more of a floor-friendly device.

It’s a nice compact size and shape (595mm tall), small but powerful and lightweight enough at 2.6kg that you can easily move it around the house with no trouble.

Setup is easy and essentially involves attaching the base, plugging it in (the 1.8m cord gives you a good amount of room) and turning it on. I didn’t need the instruction manual.

Once the AM09 is ready to go, you have a range of different modes and settings at your disposal. As the full name suggests, the device can heat or cool and you have a choice of fan speed and temperature.

The latter is something you likely won’t find on some cheaper alternatives, which simply blow hot air unless you manually switch them off. Dyson gives you a temperature range of 0-37°C and it’s thermostatic so it’ll automatically switch off when the room reaches the correct temperature and top it up if it drops.

The AM09 can also pan left and right (though can’t be angled) and has two different modes to choose from: Diffuse and Jet Focus. The former is a wider spread of air and the latter gives you a narrow blast.

You can also set a timer and the remote, as usual, attaches to the top of the fan with magnets which is handy.

Key info such as temperature and fan speed (when you adjust it) is visible on the fan by way of a small screen above the on-board power button. It works as advertised but is close to the floor if that’s where you’ve got the AM09.

I’ve found the device heats very well, and very quietly too thanks to its bladeless design. Plus, I won’t need to put it in the loft when summer arrives because it cools as well.

Should you buy the Dyson Hot Cool Jet Focus AM09?

Overall, if it’s within your budget, then the Dyson Hot+Cool Jet Focus AM09 is a great option for a fan that heats and cools in a compact size with plenty of useful features.

It will suit box room offices like mine, as well as plenty of other spaces such as loft conversions and garden rooms. I’d just like it in more colours than the standard White Nickel combo (although the US also gets a more attractive Satin Black/Nickel colourway).
