Honor has officially entered the competitive flip phone market with the release of its first clamshell-style device, the Honor Magic V Flip.

This highly anticipated flip phone aims to challenge established players like Samsung and Motorola with its innovative design, standout features and competitive pricing.

However, the phone is currently only available in China and we are still awaiting its global launch.

But what exactly can we expect when it arrives? Here’s everything we know.

When was the Honor Magic V Flip released?

The Honor Magic V Flip was released on 13 June 2024 during a dedicated event held in Shanghai, China.

It’s not yet clear whether the device will launch globally. But if it does, it’s almost certain to arrive before the end of 2025.

Honor is usually present at the MWC trade show in Barcelona, which is taking place on 3-6 March this year. Could that be where the Magic V Flip makes its global debut? Time will tell.

How much does the Honor Magic V Flip cost?

The Honor Magic V Flip starts at CNY 4,999 (approximately $689/£535) for the base model with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The pricing goes up to CNY 6,999 (about $965/£750) for the Special Edition with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

However, don’t expect the UK prices to be anywhere near as low as those converted figures. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 (from £1,049) and Motorola Razr 50 Ultra (from £999) provide more realistic rough estimates, but hopefully the use of the older Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset could move it closer to the regular Razr 50 (from £799.99).

What specs and features does the Honor Magic V Flip have?

The Magic V Flip is already official in China, meaning we know pretty much everything about it.

Design

The Honor Magic V Flip is available in three colour options: Camellia White, Champagne Pink and Iris Black. It also offers a Special Edition, designed in collaboration with Jimmy Choo.

The device features a clamshell design with a large external cover display that’s one of the biggest and brightest in the market. The phone measures 167.3 x 75.6 x 7.15mm when unfolded and weighs 193 grams.

Display

The Magic V Flip boasts a 6.8-inch LTPO OLED main display with a resolution of 2520 x 1080 pixels and an adaptive refresh rate from 0.1Hz-120Hz. The peak brightness reaches 3,000 nits, making it highly legible even under direct sunlight.

The cover display is 4 inches with a resolution of 1092 x 1200 pixels and supports split-screen multitasking and over 40 applications. Both displays feature eye protection technologies, including PWM dimming, natural light eye protection, and sleep-aiding display features.

Performance

The device is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, paired with 12GB of RAM. Storage options include 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB, with a Special Edition offering 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

While it uses an older chipset compared to some competitors, such as Galaxy Z Flip 6 or Motorola Razr 50 Ultra , it should still provide strong performance for day-to-day tasks.

Cameras

The main camera setup is integrated into the cover display, giving it a seamless look. It features a 50Mp main camera with an f/1.9 aperture, OIS, and EIS, alongside a 12Mp ultra-wide camera with an f/2.2 aperture. The cover display houses a 50Mp selfie camera.

The camera system supports various photography modes such as portrait, time-lapse, and night mode, and can record videos in up to 4K resolution.

Battery & Charging

The phone is equipped with a 4,800mAh silicon-carbon battery, the first of its kind in a commercially sold foldable phone.

It also supports 66W fast charging, which is supposedly capable of charging the device to 45% in just 15 minutes (according to Honor).

Software

The Honor Magic V Flip runs on Android 14 with MagicOS 8.0 layered on top. However, that’s likely to be Android 15 and MagicOS 9.0 following the release of both.

It includes features optimised for the large cover display, such as split-screen multitasking and extensive app support. The software also offers AI-powered enhancements, in-depth multitasking functionality and various other smart features designed to improve user experience.
