If you’re on a quest to make your sleep space as sanitary as can be — and why wouldn’t you, considering that the average person spends one-third of their life sleeping — the Hoover’s 4-in-1 Corded Handheld UV Mattress Vacuum Cleaner is up to the challenge.

Kitted out with four cleaning functions, this piece of tech will help you thrash any allergens from your mattress thanks to its beat and roll function, vacuum up said particles as it goes, sanitise the surface with its UV-C light and dry your mattress too, so no mould has the chance to spread.

Hailed as the brand’s most powerful mattress cleaner, the motorised roller spins 4,200 times per minute, meaning dust and dust mites don’t stand a chance at evading this mattress makeover machine.

In times gone by, I’d always give my mattress the once-over with one of the best vacuum cleaners we’ve tested, like the Dyson Car+Boat . But after using Hoover’s HMC5, this will be my go-to cleaner. To find out why, keep reading.

Design and Build

  • Sturdy, lightweight and clever ergonomic design
  • Weighs only 2.2kg
  • A tidy ‎34 x 26 x 18.5cm in dimensions

There’s no doubt about it: The Hoover Company is perhaps one of the best-known home appliance brands. So much so that the word ‘hoover’ has become a colloquial way to describe the act of vacuuming.

The good news is that vacuuming your mattress with this Hoover appliance makes this chore simple. And it’s all down to the design and build. Weighing just over 2kg, which is the equivalent of holding a litre bottle of water or a bag of sugar, Hoover’s 4-in-1 Corded Handheld UV Mattress Vacuum Cleaner is super lightweight.

Admittedly, this vacuum doesn’t look like your usual handheld cleaning machine. As a mattress cleaner, it’s fairly wide so it can reach more of your mattress in less time. But at 34cm wide, 26cm in height and 18.5cm long, it’s not bulky enough that it stops you from vacuuming tight corners or edges.

The vacuum itself feels well-made. It’s white in colour with grey accents, including a transparent dual bagless bin that allows you to watch debris collect before your eyes. Underneath is a button to release the bin for emptying.

Cordless vacuums often get a lot of praise for being easy to use. But Hoover’s 4-in-1 Corded Handheld UV Mattress Vacuum Cleaner comes with a more-than-reasonable 5m white cord, which gives you loads of length to pass this machine over a double bed or even a queen or king-sized mattress.

The machine has a display located on its top which tells you what it’s doing. For example, it will tell you the humidity level, whether it’s using the UV light to sanitise the surface, if dust has been detected or whether it’s drying your mattress. Aside from that, there’s only one button, which is the on/off switch.

If you flip over the machine when it’s off, you can spot the UV light bar and the motorised ‘agitator’, which revolves 4,200 times per minute. This design element essentially beats out dust and particles embedded into the mattress with its soft nylon and rubber fibres.

Performance and Features

  • Easy to use — you just plug in and go
  • Four intuitive deep-cleaning technologies that do all the work for you
  • Suitable for upholstery and cushions

No matter how clean you thought your mattress was, let me tell you that after sweeping this cleaning gadget over your sleep surface, you’re bound to be shocked (or horrified) at how much dust and debris it picks up.

I believe this is down to its intelligent ‘beat and roll’ tech, which helps to deeply, yet carefully, penetrate your mattress and release any dirt, dust and debris trapped from deep within. Couple this with the strong suction, thanks to the cyclonic technology, which cleverly separates heavy dust and hair from fine dust, and it’s a recipe for a properly sanitised sleep space.

After plugging it in and pressing the on button (it really is that simple), you’ll hear the powerful vacuum get all fired up, ready to go.

The ergonomic handle makes this vacuum a dream to use, as you’ll just have to push down slightly on the machine to switch on the UV light — this helps to reduce bacteria, allergens and dust mites — and start rolling it over your mattress. Just know that this UV light is only activated when in direct contact with the surface, for safety reasons. UV light is harmful to skin and eyes, so don’t try to switch it on at any other time and don’t use it on pets or people.

Of course, when you can’t see the particles you’re vacuuming up, it’s a bit hard to know if the surface is clean. But as soon as you put this machine to work, the indicators on the display will flash up and give you that missing information.

For example, the smart dust sensor will light up in red if the mattress cleaner detects dust. If it detects a clean surface, it will show up green, meaning you’re all good to move on and sweep the Hoover over another section.

Meanwhile, its 50 ° C hot air drying function might flash on, to show you that it’s reducing humidity levels to prevent the spread of mould in your mattress. The ideal humidity level is said to be between 45-50%.

To be perfectly honest, finding any drawbacks to this product proved challenging. If I were being picky, I would say that the 0.6l double bin is slightly on the small side when compared to other handheld vacuums. But this space was more than ample for both a double bed and a king-sized bed.

And secondly, while I loved the bagless design which was easy to remove and clean, it does mean that you will require regular filter cleaning to keep this gadget working as best as it can.

Should you buy the Hoover 4-in-1 Corded Handheld UV Mattress Vacuum Cleaner?

Overall, the Hoover 4-in-1 Corded Handheld UV Mattress Vacuum Cleaner does what it says on the tin. It will make your mattress the cleanest it’s ever been as its powerful suction will suck up minuscule particles of dirt, debris and dust invisible to the naked eye.

And better yet, it does all the hard work for you. The clever display will show you when it’s finished cleaning, so you can move on to the next spot.

Of note was the UV light, which adds another layer of cleaning production and prevents mites from spreading, which makes it perfect for an allergy-prone household. The same goes for the ‘beat and roll’ agitator, which helps to reach dirt embedded deeper within. And there’s the heating function, which is ideal for sweaty sleepers or if you have little ones who are potty training.

The double bin was more than big enough to clean one double mattress. But if you had two or more beds to deep clean, you’d need to empty the bin in-between.

Of course, you’re not limited to only using this product on your mattress. It will also work on cushions and furniture, like your sofa, which could be great if you have pets. Personally, I think it’s brilliant. For under £80, you’ll get a piece of tech that can help you create a sanitised and super-clean sleep space.
