When the relationship between 34-year-old teacher Mary Kay Letourneau and her 12-year-old student Vili Fualaau came to light in 1997, the United States was in shock. Leterneau was sentenced to several years in prison, but after her release, the pair married and started a family. This disturbing case inspired director Todd Haynes to create the film May December.
It tells the story of actress Elizabeth (Natalie Portman), who is preparing to play the role of Gracie (Julianne Moore), a fictionalised version of Mary Kay Letourneau. As part of her research for the role, Elizabeth tries to get closer to Gracie, and meets her husband Joe (Charles Melton), whom Gracie seduced when he was a teenager. The actress’s appearance shakes up the family’s life and makes Joe reflect on the truth of his relationship and its origins.
May December premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, where Netflix acquired distribution rights to the movie. However, this doesn’t mean the film will be globally available on the platform. Check out the trailer for the movie and find out where to watch May December below.
