Sony’s Spider-Man universe is expanding with a brand-new story coming to the silver screen. Madame Web will introduce not one, but several spider-like superheroes entangled in a violent plot.

Little was known about the movie for a long time, but that changed when the first trailer dropped in November. The film promises a darker story than many MCU releases. But is it enough to reverse the current superhero fatigue that is gripping audiences across the world?

Here’s everything we know about Madame Web.

Madame Web release date

The film, starring Dakota Johnson, arrives right in time for Valentine’s Day (making it an option for any geeky couples out there). Madame Web will hit cinemas on Wednesday, 14 February 2024.

Who is Madame Web?

The comic book heroine Cassandra Webb first appears in The Amazing Spider-Man issue from the 1980s. She is an older woman with an unknown past, suffering from leg paralysis. She moves around in a wheelchair and, for a long time, she is dependent on a life-supporting system. She is blind, and gifted with clairvoyance due to a strange genetic mutation. Later, she undergoes a ritual granting her immortality and establishes the Spider-Women group. She is an ally of Peter Parker.

However, in the comics, there’s another Madame Web, known as Julia Carpenter. She inherits the gift and the alias from Cassandra after the older woman is fatally injured and dies.

The question is, which superhero will we see in the movie?

Madame Web plot

The protagonist of the upcoming Marvel film will be Cassandra Webb – a dedicated paramedic who becomes a victim of a fatal accident. However, Cassandra not only returns to the world of the living but also discovers extraordinary powers – incredible strength, speed, agility, and the ability to foresee the future.

However, there’s also a danger in her freshly recovered life – a mysterious spider-man, Ezekiel Sims, wandering through New York and attacking people on his way. Cassandra soon realises that she must confront this murderous stranger.

In addition to Cassandra, two other Spider-Women will appear in the film: Julia Carpenter and Mattie Franklin, as well as Anya Corazon, aka Spider-Girl. Adam Scott is also confirmed to appear, and many are suspecting that he will play a young Ben Parker.

Is Madame Web connected with the MCU?

Madame Web is a film created by Sony and belongs to the Spider-Man Universe, focused on Peter Parker and his adversaries. This series includes films such as Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, and Venom 3.

Sony shares the rights to Peter Parker’s character with Marvel Studios, allowing films like Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home to be made. At the same time, in movies about Peter’s enemies, Sony introduced the well-known MCU concept of the multiverse.

So, while there’s currently no indication that Madame Web will make contact with Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, it’s possible. Cassandra Webb simply inhabits an alternate world, and perhaps someday, her path will cross with the MCU superheroes – if Disney grants access, of course.
