The first product in the Surface range was a tablet with a detachable keyboard , but we’ve come a long way since then – the Surface Go 4 is the latest instalment in the line.

It wasn’t until 2018 that Microsoft 2-in-1s became genuinely affordable. That’s when the first Surface Go arrived, becoming one of the cheapest devices running a full version of Windows in the process. That’s remained the case across two subsequent generations, although 2021’s Surface Go 3 was very much an iterative update.

But after skipping last year entirely, the Surface Go 4 is official, with one major caveat.

When will the Surface Go 4 be released?

The Surface Go 4 was unveiled on 21 September 2023. It’s available now, having been released on 3 October 2023.

However, this isn’t a product that’s designed for consumers. Microsoft says it’s “available exclusively for organizations”, but anyone can still buy one on the Microsoft website:

  • Buy the Surface Go 4 in the US
  • Buy the Surface Go 4 in the UK

The Surface Go 4 was announced alongside the Laptop Studio 2 and Laptop Go 3 , both of which are also now on sale.

For context, here’s when the previous generations of Surface Go were released:

  • Surface Go 3 – October 2021
  • Surface Go 2 – May 2020
  • Surface Go – August 2018

How much will the Surface Go 4 cost?

The Surface Go 4 starts at $579.99/£529 . That’s more expensive than previous generations, but apparently due to its extra business-focused features. Here are all three models:

  • Intel N200, 8GB RAM, 64GB storage – $579.99/£529
  • Intel N200, 8GB RAM, 128GB storage – $679.99/£629
  • Intel N200, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage – $779.99/£729

Here are the previous startingprices for the Surface Go:

  • Surface Go 3 – from £369/US$399.99
  • Surface Go 2 – from £399/US$399.99
  • Surface Go – from £379/US$399.99

What specs and new features will the Surface Go 4 have?

The Go 4 will launch with Intel’s N200 processor and 8GB of RAM. There will be three storage options to choose from: 64GB, 128GB and 256GB. This is a nice upgrade over the Intel Core i3-10100Y chip found in the top-spec Surface Go 3 .

The Surface Go 4 is expected to have a typical 12.5 hour battery life. It comes with either Windows 11 Pro or Windows 10 Pro, and preloaded Microsoft 365 Business apps (providing the user has an active license).

It comes with a 10.5in, 1920×1080 LCD display, a 1080p front-facing camera and an 8Mp rear facing camera. It has dual mics with Voice Clarity for video calls, and stereo speakers with Dolby Audio.

One of the main frustrations with the Go 3 was its lack of ports. There’s just one USB-C, one microSD and Surface Connect for charging. Fortunately, the Go 4 adds the long-awaited headphone jack, and Surface Type Cover port. It also comes with Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity.
