After the failure and cancellation of The Acolyte , there was uncertainty about another Star Wars series. Skeleton Crew struck a lighter tone than previous productions, drawing on titles such as The Goonies, E.T. and Stand by Me.
With a 91% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes , and a high audience score, it may seem like this Disney+ show starring Jude Law was a hit. However, there’s another factor at play that may impact the show’s return.
Here’s everything we know about a possible season 2 of Skeleton Crew.
Will Skeleton Crew be renewed for season 2?
Renewal for new series often comes down to ratings, and Skeleton Crew doesn’t appear to have as big of a following as Disney may have hoped for. According to Tech Radar , it was the least popular premiere of any Star Wars series to date, and it also never cracked the top ten list from analyst company Nielsen .
The Book of Boba Fett and The Acolyte had stronger openings than this series, and neither of those got a second season, so it seems rather unlikely.
It’s not all doom and gloom though. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly , showrunners Jon Watts and Christopher Ford gave the following quote:
We have ideas in our heads for sure. We’re waiting to find out what everyone else thinks, but we’ve always had an idea of where this could go even before we made the first season. So there’s lots of potential out there and hope everyone sees that. Season 1 finished with a nicely rounded ending, so it would make sense if this were now considered a complete story… but that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of the ragtag crew and the rogue pirate Jod. ©2024 Lucasfilm Ltd. & TM. Why the cast of Skeleton Crew could return in another film or series
Star Wars is now a sprawling universe, and several projects take place around the same time as this show, including Ahsoka and The Mandalorian and Grogu . In fact, this is something the writers have already considered, telling Tech Radar the following:
We’ve mainly been focused on telling this story, but there’s always a chance that they [the kids] could meet some surprising people in the future.
Skeleton Crew ending explained
Throughout the series, we followed a group of four children – Wim, Fern, Neel and KB – as they attempted to find their way home from the depths of space to their planet, At Attin. Along the way they met Jod, who they initially believed was a Jedi.
Eventually, it was revealed that he was actually a pirate who only wanted access to At Attin due to its riches. However, the planet was essentially hidden from the rest of the galaxy, and protected by an iron-tight barrier.
When the children found the coordinates to their planet, they were followed by Jod, who threatened to kill both them and their families. He then entered through the barrier on the kid’s ship, which was recognised to be safe as it was from At Attin. He then pretended to be a New Republic Ambassador, so he could gain access to the hidden treasure.
After destroying the robot supervisor, Jod allowed the rest of the pirates access to the planet to plunder the gold. However, the kids fought back. Neel defended his home using a large gun, while Wim and Fern disabled the barrier that allowed KB to fly the ship up and send a call for help to the X-Wings.
