Sky has announced a new Sky Sports+ service which will roll out this August as a free upgrade for its customers.

The broadcasting giant says that viewers will be able to watch more than 50% more sport this year, with more coverage of various sports including football, tennis and rugby.

Although the ‘plus’ moniker suggests it might be a separate streaming service, it’s more of an evolution of Sky Sports . It will be integrated into Sky Q, Sky Glass , Sky Stream, Now and the Sky Sports app, including a new dedicated channel.

Sky says it has the “capability to show up to 100 live events via concurrent streams” and the Sky Sports+ linear channel will “showcase a selection of the best live sport”.

Though watching 100 events at the same time, even with a huge TV, seems mad Sky has confirmed with Tech Advisor that it is technically possible:

“Sky Sports+ has the technical capability to show up to 100 live events concurrently. Whilst we don’t anticipate streaming 100 live events immediately, we may well get to this at some point in the future as we grow our proposition. Our platform has been built to respond to and enable the scaling of content as we need it.”

It’s particularly good news for EFL (English Football League) fans, as all 72 teams from the Championship, League 1 and League 2 will be featured over 20 times a season – including every single match from the opening weekend. Meanwhile, fans of the men’s Super League rugby league will be treated to every single match live.

The service will also offer documentaries such as the upcoming ‘Darts’ , two weeks before ‘anyone else’, while the ‘Recap’ feature (which has been available for Premier League and Championship football) will be extended to include League 1 and League 2.

Furthermore, the revamped Sky Sports app will get a new design, including dark mode and new personalisation features. You’ll also get an improved multi-sports scores section with fixtures, live scores and an extended calendar view.

Sky Sports+ on Now - 2

Anyone watching Sky Sports on Now (formerly Now TV) with a Now Sports membership will get an additional upgrade…

As well as getting Sky Sports+ like other Sky services, you’ll be able to pause and rewind live sports for the first time.

Jonathan Licht, Managing Director at Sky Sports, said: “Exceptional sport, covered in an innovative and compelling way, has been a big part of our history. With the introduction of Sky Sports+, we are now able to offer sport fans more choice and an even better experience when watching the live action, at no extra cost.

Sky Sports+ will roll out to all Sky Q, Glass, Stream and Now in August, just in time for the start of the new football season.
