If you use Spotify for events and social gatherings – whether it’s a house party or your own wedding (as I did) – your playlist is about to get a serious level-up.
From today, Spotify Premium users have the option to add transitions between tracks on their playlists to customise the way that one song flows into another – just the way DJs do. The feature is currently in Beta and rolling out to users around the world.
The music streaming service is offering two options to create these mixes. Auto mode blends the songs with a tap of a button. However, if you want ultimate control over the volume, the option to mash tempos, add custom effects and choose when songs cross over, you can do this with custom mode.
Spotify advises starting with genres that lend themselves well to transitions. For example, dance music (such as house or techno) is a good one to experiment with as it has solid, consistent beats. Additionally, these songs are well suited for getting people onto the dance floor.
But of course, transitions can be applied to other genres or used in scenarios where you don’t want pauses in your music. For example, you could mix gentle lo-fi tracks to get the best flow for yoga and meditation, or mash together your favourite indie hits for long drives.

How to create a Spotify transition between tracks on your playlist
- Make sure you’re signed up for Spotify Premium, and opt into Spotify Beta testing
- Either make a new playlist, or open an existing one
- On the toolbar beneath the album art, tap the button labelled ‘Mix’
- Click ‘Auto’ to create a quick transition if you’re short on time
- Tap the song to create a custom transition
- Opt for presets such as ‘Fade’ or ‘Rise’, or use the waveform to find the best place for your transition, and get direct control over the volume, EQ and effects
- When you’re done, click ‘Save’ to hear the transition in your playlist
- Turn off your transition by pressing the ‘Mix’ button
