In summary

  • Galaxy A37 firmware appears on test servers
  • US availability confirmed
  • Needs some sweeping improvements over A36

The existence of the Samsung Galaxy A37 mid-range smartphone has been all but confirmed

Firmware for the Galaxy A37 has popped up on Samsung’s test servers, under model number SM-A376U.

Not only does this confirm that a follow-up to the Samsmung Galaxy A36 is on the way, but also that the US will be included in the action.

As well as that model name, the firmware code makes reference to various US network carriers, including AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and UScellular.

That’s bigger news than it sounds, because believe it or not, our American cousins aren’t always included in such smartphone launch plans. The US didn’t get the Samsung Galaxy A26 at all.

Elsewhere, while they eventually got the Samsung Galaxy A56 , it took four months to make the journey across the Atlantic.

Samsung Galaxy A37 – What I want to see

That’s it for details on the Samsung Galaxy A37. We have no idea concerning any of its specs or features.

Having reviewed its predecessor, and finding it to be a decent phone that nonetheless “fails to advance much beyond the Galaxy A35”, I have some thoughts on what I’d like to see from the follow-up.

My biggest criticism with the Samsung Galaxy A36, other than its inherent similarity to its predecessor, was its poor performance. The Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 Samsung chose to use didn’t advance things much at all, and I found the Samsung Galaxy A36 to be a little more sluggish than I would have liked. More speed please, Samsung.

Next, I’d like to see some progress on the phone’s design. Not only did the Galaxy A36 look overfamiliar, it felt a little cheap and plasticky, while the colour options were a little bland.

Finally, at £399/$399, the Samsung Galaxy A36 just didn’t feel like great value. Not with the stylish Nothing Phone (3a) Pro (which also packs a telephoto camera) and the downright premium-feeling Honor 400 for company.

Samsung probably won’t drop the price of the Galaxy A37, but it really needs an all-round upgrade if it’s to stand up to its tougher mid-range competitors.
