Nubia has announced a brand new gaming tablet , and it’s got a couple of features that could position it as a Switch 2 rival.
Most notably, the display has gotten smaller, but also better. It now has a 9.06-inch OLED display with 2.4K resolution and a 165Hz refresh rate. The Nubia Redmagic Nova came with a 10.9-inch 144Hz LCD. The top brightness level has also doubled from 550 nits to 1,100 nits in the new tablet.
Given that the Nintendo Switch 2 has faced some criticism for dropping OLED from the package, it’s an interesting inclusion.
Redmagic Astra price and availability
Having been announced in China already, we can now confirm the Redmagic Astra will cost $499/€499 in Western markets.
However, Early Bird pricing starts at $469/€469 (no UK price has been given) and will also get you a free 80W charger. You can claim this discount voucher between 10-15 July, with the latter being the release date on the official Redmagic store .
The official global release date is the next day, 16 July .

This new, more compact gaming tablet (the bezels are uniform and just 4.9mm thick) also packs a performance upgrade, running on the same Snapdragon 8 Elite processor. This doesn’t seem to be the same overclocked Leading Version that we saw in the Redmagic 10S Pro , which is a shame, but it’s still a generational upgrade on the Nubia Redmagic Nova with its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip.
You do get the RedCore R3 Pro chip, however, which enables many titles to be upscaled and run at 2K resolution with 120Hz refresh rates.
An ICE-X Cooling system, complete with vapour chamber cooling, liquid metal thermal compounds, and a dedicated fan, promises to keep things chilly across extended gaming sessions.
Nubia has packed it with 12GB, 16GB, or 24GB of LPDDR5T RAM, and there’s a choice of 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of UFS 4.1 Pro storage.
A large 8,200mAh battery powers it all, and there’s support for 80W charging.

You get Nubia’s signature Redmagic style, with a solid aluminium body and a semi-transparent flat back. And yes, there is RGB lighting here too.
Interestingly, RedMagic has preloaded a PC emulator that can apparently run triple-A titles like Tomb Raider at full frame rates. By utilising the forthcoming Redmagic Shadow Blade Gamepad 3 (complete with robust Hall-effect analogue sticks – something the Switch 2 also omits), you could have yourself a proper portable gaming setup.
Even if you don’t buy the whole Switch 2 comparison angle (it’s a stretch, we admit), this could be an interesting alternative to the handheld gaming PC market. Watch out Steam Deck , then?
